Our inaugural volunteer appreciation dinner took place Wednesday night, November 30, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church.  Hosted by Memnosyne Foundation’s Interfaith Service Network, nearly 100 people were in attendance in celebration of this multicultural effort to serve the greater Dallas – Fort Worth community. People of all ages were in attendance representing various faith traditions including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sufi, Unity, and Unitarians. The menu and delicious food was provided by all in attendance in a pot-luck style dinner, featuring all kinds of ethnic dishes.

The common theme shared by all traditions was voiced unequivocally by the leaders present, along with the volunteer members from their communities, and that being, “that which you do unto the least of these, you do unto me.” The focus of this year’s efforts of the Interfaith Service Network is in keeping with these familiar words of Jesus. “When I was hungry, you gave me food,” was the theme echoed by Christian, Jew, Muslim and all present. Each tradition shares the belief that when we feed the hungry, “the least of these,” we are in truth feeding God. The Interfaith Service Network is a living witness to the truth of what Pope John Paul II was quoted as saying, “that which unites us is greater than that which divides us.”

Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church graciously provided the venue in their Founders Hall. Rev. Dr. Todd Collier, a Presbyterian minister and Director of the Interfaith Service Network, draws on his own tradition’s ecumenical commitment which states, “The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will seek new opportunities for conversation and understanding with non-Christian religious bodies in order that interests and concerns may be shared and common action undertaken where compatible means and aims exist” (Book of Order, Ch. 15).

Common action is what is needed to address common problems shared by people of all faiths and cultural backgrounds, and that being hunger. The Interfaith Service Network celebrates the fact that faith is best demonstrated in action. Our gratitude goes out to all who participate in our many service opportunities throughout the year as together we work to alleviate hunger in our communities.
